Colloquium on Outreach and Integration in Family Services – Enhancing the Capacity of the NGO Sector

This Colloquium, conducted by the University of Newcastle, Australia, is directed towards enhancing the capacity of non-government family and community service organisations to effectively deliver outreach and integrated services and programs.

The focus of the Colloquium will be outreach and integration of family services. Our Division’s interest is in the service system and its capacity to engage and assist families in ways which ensure that the mix of universal and targeted services is effective in terms of reach, engagement and delivery. The aim is to enhance the capacity of the service system to strengthen families in their nurturing, educational and supporting roles at various stages and points of vulnerability. To this end the Colloquium will:
  • Review the most up to date knowledge on why outreach and integration are important, and what is known about effective models of outreach and integration.
  • Identify what is fostering and what is hindering the capacity of NGOs to implement outreach and integrated service models.
  • Identify key policies and strategies that will enhance the capacity of NGOs in various national contexts to deliver more effective outreach and integrated service models.

Documentaries

Her Highness Sheikha Mozah, Consort of His Highness the Emir of Qatar, President of Qatar Foundation and Founder of The Doha International Institute for Family Studies and Development, has repeatedly noted that healthy family life is a central component of sustainable personal, social and economic development. A series of three documentaries on family life produced by The Doha Institute explore the norms and practices that ensure well-functioning families and prosperous and peaceful societies.
The documentaries, derived from scores of interviews with families and scholars from 17 nations, reflect the challenges (and opportunities) of family life around the world. The families and experts interviewed for the documentaries speak in many languages and reflect diverse cultures, but demonstrate that there are widely shared values and practices that support meaningful and quality family life. The three documentaries are narrated (and subtitled) in both English and Arabic. Viewers are encouraged to reach their own conclusions and take action to improve their own family relationships.
Each program features families, scholars and government leaders from around the world who respond to a series of questions developed by family scholars over 20 years of academic and clinical research. Experts from Qatar, Malaysia, Brazil and the United States add insight a commentary regarding the real lives of real families. Each program concludes with simple but powerful concepts that lie at the heart of an effective, strong family-whatever the family's ethnicity or culture.

Program 1: What Makes Family Life Meaningful?
  • How can we support healthy family life?
  • What are the characteristics of a strong family?
Families respond to a sequence of questions about characteristics or attributes essential for building a quality family. Parents consider what brought the greatest harmony, sense of belonging, or mutual joy to their family.
