A Look at Legislation and Policy to Strengthen Marriages and Prevent Unnecessary Divorces

October 21, 2011

This past summer a team of research assistants here at Brigham Young University helped me collect information about government efforts to help couples form and sustain healthy marriages and relationships. We collected information on legislation and government-supported educational initiatives in all 50 states (and Washington D.C.), including funding and numbers of people participating in funded marriage and relationship education programs. We tried to be as comprehensive as possible. So what did we learn so far from all this information? In short, we learned that there is a lot of activity in some states but very little in others, but the efforts have dramatically expanded the opportunity of lower income couples to participate in marriage and relationship education. Another clear lesson is that it is the feds rather than the states that are supporting this agenda. Let’s start there.

The ‘Health Explosion’

  October 16,2011

The “population explosion” of the past generation — the era when the tempo of world population growth surged and then peaked before commencing its current decline — was a phenomenon widely misunderstood and misinterpreted in academic and policy circles. Population did not boom because people suddenly started breeding like rabbits, but rather because they finally stopped dying like flies: the “population explosion” was in reality a “health explosion,” with improvements in longevity driving the entirety of this increase in human numbers.

Why do even satisfied newlyweds eventually go on to divorce?

November 1,2011

Although divorce typically follows an extended period of unhappiness that begins early in marriage, some couples who are very happy throughout the first several years of marriage will also go on to divorce. This study aimed to identify risk factors early in marriage that distinguish initially satisfied couples who eventually divorce from those who remain married.

How can I make my husband be a consistent parent?

November 12, 2011

In utter desperation I’ve imposed a Supernanny-style regime on my two young children. I’ve asked my husband to back me up, but he refuses to follow a rule book and prefers his own ‘instinctive’ approach (ie being inconsistent). I feel undermined – how can I persuade him to stick to the rules and work with me?

How To Create More Intact Families

October 26, 2011

ST. LOUIS - “Taxpayers are spending a trillion dollars a year to subsidize non-marriage – 75% federal and 25% by states – which goes to the single mom,” Phyllis Schlafly asserted at the launching of a new Center for Marriage Policy. She noted Ronald Reagan once said, `If you subsidize something, you will get more of it.’”

Why we decided to get 'undivorced'

Eighteen months ago my husband stormed out of the family home saying he wanted a divorce. It wasn’t the first time the subject had come up.

Youth and Healthy Relationships Collection by Topic

The majority of young people of both sexes say that "having a good marriage and family life is ‘extremely important' to them." Yet, far too many youth have low expectations of ever experiencing a healthy romantic relationship or marriage.1 The good news is that the skills and knowledge needed to create healthy relationship can be learned. And, once learned, young people become more confident that they can build healthy romantic relationships and marriage.

Did marriage evolve because of economics or because of children?

October  18, 2011

Why did marriage evolve? There are two basic answers to this question. One is that down to very recent times it was mostly a response to economic necessity. The competing view is that it developed mainly as a way to encourage men and women to raise their children together.
